Colors are everywhere. Can you imagine life without them? The amazing colored parrots in this picture would be dull gray instead. Colors not only make life interesting, they also help animals and plants in many different ways.
Color comes from light. Light from the Sun looks white. But when the light shines through a special piece of glass called a prism, it separates into a rainbow of colors. White light is really a mixture of colors.
Mixing two colors together makes a new color. If you mix yellow and red paint together, you get orange. Yellow and blue make green, and blue and red make purple. Some animals use color as a way of protecting themselves. For example, A poison arrow frog of South America has bright blue skin to warn other animals that it's dangerous to eat. Flowers have brightly colored to attract insect. The insect help petalsspread a powder called pollen to other flowers. This helps to make seeds that will grow into new plants.
