EARTH

Earth is our planet. It is a huge ball of rock that travels in space around the Sun. It also slowly spins around. At any one moment, only half of Earth faces the Sun. The side facing the Sun has day, and the other side has night. It takes 24 hours for Earth to spin around once. It takes Earth one year, or about 365 days, to go once around the Sun. Earth's orbit -the path it follows around the Sun- is close to the shape of a circle.

Earth is the only planet known to have life. Life on Earth began about 4 billion years ago. The first life forms were tiny and lived in the sea. Over time, other life forms came into being. Today, plants and animals live almost everywhere on Earth and come in an amzing number of shape, colors, and sizes.
